Alzheimer Research Breakfast

As part of the January 2012 Alzheimer Awareness month events,  The Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia held their annual Alzheimer Research Breakfast titled Dementia: Let’s Face It. Dr. Melissa Andrew, Chair of the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia greeted the crowd of partners, allies, caregivers, and volunteers. The Research Breakfast is designed to engage health care professionals, business professionals, government, and individuals with current research around Alzheimer’s disease or other dementias. This year the breakfast had two guest speakers, Maria Franks and Dr. Paige Moorhouse, who discussed new programs benefiting seniors and caregivers.

Maria Franks, Executive Director of the Legal Information Society of Nova Scotia (LISNS), educated the audience on the It's In Your Hands: Legal Information for Seniors and their Families, which was done in partnership with Nova Scotia Centre on Aging (Mount Saint Vincent University). The Legal Information Kit was created for seniors and their caregivers to increase awareness and understanding of how to handle legal affairs and protect from financial fraud, abuse, and exploitation. Franks addressed how common financial fraud can be, quoting the RCMP records that found millions of dollars had been embezzled through email and phone, among other examples of fraudulent activity. She also outlined topics in the toolkit created to educate seniors and their families on legal affairs including Powers of Attorney, Personal Care Directives, Wills, and other related legal advice.

Dr. Moorhouse from the Division of Geriatric Medicine at Dalhousie University is one of the developers of the Palliative and Therapeutic Harmonization (PATH) clinic . At the Research Breakfast, Dr. Moorhouse educated the audience on the clinic’s goals to guide frail adults and their families in making health care decisions that will protect their best interests and quality of life. The PATH clinic provides valuable information and skills for the patient and their caregivers to help with future health decisions.

Ms. Franks and Dr. Moorhouse gave excellent presentations on the programs available to seniors and caregivers on handling legal affairs and elder care. Caregivers Nova Scotia thanks the Alzheimer Society for sharing with the community the research and programs available to the public and caregivers.
